Autistics and Profound Autism Term

There is a huge global push underway to establish the horrible term "profound autism" just as people are beginning to see the need to reject the obscene functioning label "severe autism", a push led by a nasty group called NCSA and the DSM folk, both of whom absolutely loathe what autistics have done to "confound the separate issues of minor and mild Aspergers with totally disabling and defective autism".Β

Sadly, Dr Temple Grandin earlier on provided much of the mis-commentary basis for such a move with her distinction between 'autism to be avoided or cured' and 'autism to be developed'.

"PROFOUND AUTISM: A made-up non-scientific term used to divide autistics based on arbitrary ciams, false perspectives, and ignorance, that refers to those...

- requiring round-the-clock care, or

- lifelong care, or

- unable to speak, or

- with severely challenging behaviours, or

- habitually committing self-harm, or

- demonstrating high levels of aggression, or

- having severe intellectual disability, or

- being incontinent after 5 years of age, or

- living in a residential or group home, or

- requiring high levels of supervision, or

- having high clinical and outpatient demands, or

- in stepped-care or incarceration, or

- in a psychiatric forensic unit, or

- experiencing dissociative states, or

- requiring a high degree of resources, or

- liable to elope, wander, run away, or

- deeply affected by OCD's, Tourettes, or Epilepsy, or

- unable to be clothed, or

- insistent upon gender identity change, or

- requiring restraint, seclusion, or isolation, or

- in a program where skin-shocking is utilised, or

- not able to make informed choices for themselves,

or multiples of the above."

Divide and conquer

They want to discriminate so that one type of autistics will be at their mercy, without rights, and the other type will be ignored and ejected into their own exclusionary space, given no rights either.Β Β

Profound and Superficial

You can't put autistics in a box.Β  If there is one thing we have learned about autism, that is it!Β  The term "profound" undermines itself, as it seeks to put not just one type of autistics in a box, but all autistics into one of just two boxes: Profound and Superficial.

All autistics are or can be profound, severe, mild, something, at different times and in differing circumstances.

Backward Splittism

This splittism is something we all have to rise to reject, or risk facing a twenty year long battle to get that parent-forced division removed again.Β  It would set our movement back 20 years or so.

100% of autistics stand to lose massively, by two quite different means, if we are not successful in rejecting "profound autism" as a valid term.
